Impact Of Pandemic On Small Business In Canada

SMEs are significant contributors to Canada’s economy. The Covid 19 pandemic devastated small businesses the most in all countries and Canada is no exception. Small businesses play a significant role in Canada’s employment capabilities as it employed about two-thirds of the country’s labor force in 2020 which translates to 9.7 million. On the other hand, only 2.3 million people (14.8%) worked for big businesses and 3.2 million people (21.2%) worked for medium-sized businesses. Therefore, small and medium businesses are the drivers of the economy.

Small businesses went down the hill in 2020
The initial impact of the pandemic was the most damaging as the majority of small businesses were reeling under the deadly blow that resulted in extensive closures across the country. Entrepreneurs across diverse groups had been the hardest hit. Amid the threats of survival, revenues of small businesses dropped sharply by 20% and more in 2020 as compared to the previous year. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in Canada, 70% of small businesses recorded more than a 30% drop in revenue as revealed in a 2020 survey by The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses. Extensive job losses during this time only aggravated the economic problems that also had far-reaching social implications.

The picture at the end of 2021
Small business owners had to show immense courage and grit to work their way out of the mess they were in 2020. Although small business owners did manage to move in the right direction on the road to recovery, the pace was slow and uneven. By the last quarter of 2021, big businesses could see the silver lining in the coming 12 months, small businesses could not be as optimistic. Moreover, the level of optimism in the last quarter was lower than in the previous quarter. Small businesses were uncertain about their future and in hindsight, it seems they were correct as the threat of global recession looms large.

Some obstacles and financial hardships seem inevitable in 2022
The most common obstacle that small business owners expected to face during the first quarter of 2022 was the rising cost of inputs that could put a spanner in their recovery efforts. Added to it, poor demand for goods could be another impediment to a speedy recovery.

Fluctuating consumer demand which did not change much in the last 11 months is a major worry as we head toward the end of 2022. Financial constraints will continue to keep small business owners worried.
